Some Brief History

It was in the early 70's that the first rumblings of BMX began. It started with California kids, their 20" Stingray bikes, and vacant lots. These early BMXers took their mode of transportation (bicycles) and began to emulate motorcycle motocross. Almost immediately, the connection with motorcycles was left behind. Bicycle motocross was a sport all its own. These kids learned that their agile machines could be flicked about with only their developing skills as limits to what they could do. From these early beginnings, BMX has grown and spread in Canada and other countries of the world. It has youth from all over the world thinking and racing BMX.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Race?

The sport of BMX racing has grown to be a popular pastime for "kids" of all ages. The youngest class begins at "4 years and under", and it's not unusual to see a three year old, fresh off the training wheels, pedaling the track. The oldest class is the "18 years and older", and many riders can be waaaay over 18. Many of the Dads of racers ride in this group. AND GIRLS, don't forget the girls! Girls classes are abundant, ranging in age from "4 years and under" to "18 years and over".
What Is A BMX Track Like?

One of the greatest things about BMX racing, is the tracks themselves! Made of dirt, they have jumps and obstacles of all sizes. The turns are called "berms" and are tall and banked. Every track is unique and no two tracks are alike. Much like the obstacles and layout, the length of each track varies as well. Your average BMX track is 1,000 to 1,300 feet long. That's about a 40 to 50 second sprint.

An Individual Sport With Family Involvement!

On the track, the BMX racer learns to make his or her own decisions. Right or wrong, win or lose, they are the racer's. They are in control. BMX is an individual sport that builds a young person's self-confidence. They learn that hard work, self-discipline and thinking for themselves will take them to the winner's circle. At the time they are learning these important lessons, they are having more fun than they could ever imagine.
Off the track the whole family is involved. Dad becomes the mechanic and Mom and the rest of the family lead the cheering section. BMX outings become the highlight of a family's time together.

How To Get Started And Where To Race?

Obviously, the first thing you'll need in order to race BMX, is to find out where your local track is. You can do this by contacting the Lethbridge BMX track at (403)320-0452, 724 - 7 Street North, Lethbridge, Alberta (northwest corner of Dave Elton Park Complex). Membership is open to all boys and girls aged 3 and older. Come out and enjoy the fun. Now that you know where the local track is, plan a trip there on Race Day.

It's easy to get started in BMX Racing. Quite simply, all you need to race BMX is a long sleeved shirt, long pants, a full face helmet (we recommend always wearing a helmet when riding your bike!).....and of course, your BMX bike. If you're looking to try it out, just come on down and we'll set you up with a demo bike and helmet! As a first time rider, your bike will be inspected and you'll be entered in a class where you will race kids of your own age and skill level. The different levels in BMX racing are:" Novice", "Intermediate", and eventually "Expert". Of course, your first time out you won't be racing in the Expert class, but with determination it won't be long before you're riding in the Expert class and having more fun than you thought possible!
